” A good pilot is compelled to always evaluate what’s happened; so he can apply what he’s learned. “
– CMDR Mike Metcalf, Top Gun
Who is Jason Spears really? Well… Its complicated. Lol. Honesty, If I had to define the core of who I am, I would say I’m just a thinker; someone with an acute sense of wonder and an insatiable curiosity. Frequently I find myself fascinated by the brilliance of God’s created order and the care he puts into details – Its like finding His fingerprint. See, for me, its not about being “critical” or “deep” as much as it’s about accuracy and truthfulness. Why those two? Because, I think accuracy aids in clarifying or refocusing an issue by taking note of the details, which in turn helps prevent deception from concealing the truth, and truth, when its discovered, can free the soul to be completely alive. It’s this freedom that I crave above all else.
See, I believe myself to be a creature indued with freedom of will by my Creator, but that raises an interesting question, “the will to do what?” The will to think freely; to reason logically, deduce accurately, and conclude truthfully, so that I might act responsibly. Its this freedom that I seek to help others find; but to do so places me squarely in the middle of a war — a truth war.
Its been said that the first casualty of any war is truth. In fact, Winston Churchill once quipped that “In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” Now I happen to disagree with Mr. Churchill. I have found, whether at war or peace, that all lies serve the same purpose: to manipulate the will by impeding truth in order to arrest the mind. No wonder the ability to think for one’s self has been one of the most cherished and besieged liberties in the history of man, and yet it is one of the most essential aspects of Christianity under increasing fire in western thought.
I find it astonishing that so much of Christ’s message focuses on changing the way one thinks. I think Leonardo DiCaprio got it right in his film Inception when he said that “there is nothing more resilient than an idea fully formed in the mind.” This is the very reason why Scripture teaches that ideas are the forefront of spiritual warfare; and that’s right where I come in. My job is to persuade the mind, stir the emotions, and provoke the will by asking questions which dislodge ideas that are not only hostile to the Christian faith but prevent people from examining the counter-perspective of Christ more easily. In order for one to consider the Christian perspective, one must first be free: free to evaluate, free to think, and most importantly, free to choose.
So what about you? What will you choose to do? Will you decide to stretch your mind a little, maybe read a new article or learn more about a topic you’re interested in? I hope so, because if knowledge is power, then I think learning is the key to unleashing it. I hope you’ve enjoyed learning something about me, and hopefully our paths will cross again. But until then, please…keep thinking!
